June 5th was International Day of the Environment, and the Botanical Garden in Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo, held a variety of activities. There were many stands offering items for sale, as well as educational information. Mostly it was people enjoying a few hours away from school or the office.

People wandered the paths and enjoyed a short concert at the outdoor theater, and a ceremony offered by a Mayan priest honoring the rain deities.

I think I’ll return to the garden in the late autumn when it’s cooler. The breeze didn’t penetrate the woods, and I felt wilted by time the visit ended. Many people went to a tent where horchata — a drink prepared from rice polish — and sliced fruit was sold.

Another option is visiting after a storm because it will (momentarily) be cooler and offer a sweet scent of the moistened undergrowth.
